Regional General Permit Notification for
Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit Bank Stabilization
Project
Fremont County, Colorado
Corps File No. RGP-37
June 1, 2018
Project Description
Transit Mix Concrete Company(Transit Mix)is proposing bank stabilization along approximately 415
linear feet of the east bank of the Arkansas River at the Transit Mix Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit in Fremont
County,Colorado(project area;Figure 1). High flows along the Arkansas River have eroded a portion of
the east bank of the Arkansas River and a section of the access road into the pit. Portions of the east
bank of the Arkansas River consist of 10-to 15-foot-high cut banks adjacent to the access road. To
reduce erosion and protect the adjacent access road,Transit Mix is proposing to install four concrete
cross vanes and install concrete rubble bank protection along the Arkansas River within the project area.
Transit Mix retained ERO Resources Corporation(ERO)to assist with requesting authorization under the
Regional General Permit(RGP-37)for Stream Stabilization Projects in Colorado.
Location
The project area is in Section 18,Township 19 South,Range 68 West and Section 13,Township 19 South,
Range 69 West of the 6"'Principal Meridian in Fremont County,Colorado(Figures 1 and 2). The UTM
coordinates of the approximate center of the project area are 495479mE,4249598mN,Zone 13N. The
longitude/latitude of the project area is 105.051770°W/38.394583°N. The elevation of the project area
is approximately 5,075 feet above sea level. Photos of the project area are in Appendix A.
Site Description
Existing Conditions
The project area is along approximately 415 linear feet of the Arkansas River at the Transit Mix Grisenti
Farms Gravel Pit generally located south of Penrose in Fremont County,Colorado. The Arkansas River
generally flows from northwest to south in the project area. Erosion is occurring along the east bank of
the Arkansas River and portions of the east bank are incised up to 15 feet(Photo 1). The erosion is
threatening an access road in the Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit and portions of the access road have been
closed off to protect commercial traffic. Uplands in the project area are dominated smooth brome
(Bromus inermis),meadow fescue(Schedonorus pratensis),kochia (Bassin scoparia),and common
mullein(Verbascum thapsus)(Photo 2). Due to the erosion,several plains cottonwood trees(Populus
deltoides)have fallen into the river and several more are being threatened by the erosion(Photo 3).
ERO Project#t7141 1
7
