Decommissioning Plan Schwartzwalder Mine

RML CO-369-06
Cotter Corporation (N.S.L.) 10 March 2017
surveys will be performed on the remaining equipment and building structures, items exceeding
the unrestricted release criteria will be decontaminated before release from the site or will be
placed into the mine for disposal.

2.5.2 Soils
Samples of surface soils at the Mine were collected by Cotter in September of 2008 to evaluate
residual uranium and radium concentrations. Sample locations included areas with potential
impacts from mining operations as well as areas cleaned up in previous decommissioning efforts.
Sampling locations (Figure 9) were selected based on results of the gamma survey as well as
relevant historical information.

Soil samples were collected to a depth of 6 inches (15 cm), spatially located by GPS, and
analyzed in the field by x-ray fluorescence (XRF), a screening technology used to estimate
concentrations of metals in soil (e.g. uranium). The samples were then packaged and sent to a
commercial lab for analysis. For all samples, rocks larger than about ½ inch were excluded. For
three samples, aliquots representing all rock size fractions were also analyzed. In addition,
concrete foundations were cored to allow sampling of concrete and underlying soils. Uranium
was not detected in any of the concrete samples. The results of the soil analyses are given in
Table 2.
