I know that Clear Creek County has unwisely relied for 75%of its income from the Climax
Molybdenum mine. Now that the end of that revenue is in site, I can imagine that the income
from another mine would be attractive to the Board of County Commissioners. I would rather
pay increased property taxes than endure this kind of`fix'. To support such a permit is short-
sighted and does not demonstrate a commitment to the citizens of the County living near this
proposed mine.
In summary, this permit should not be approved. The Division of Mining, Reclamation and
Safety is committed to balancing the need for mineral resources with protection of the public, the
environment, and Colorado's natural resources. There is no shortage of sand and gravel in the
State of Colorado. The needs of the public, environment, and natural resources outweighs the
need for another sand and gravel operation as described in the application. To proceed would be
to imagine that we are using the 19' century values on which the county was ravaged rather than
21 st century values for the environment and the pleasure of unspoiled mountains which has seen
its restoration.
Sincerely,.
Charles F. v ten,2D!!PhD
254 North 'n Street
PO Box 282
Empire, CO 80438
Cc:
Board of County Commissioners
Clear Creek County
405 Argentine Street
Georgetown, CO 80444
Jefferson Conservation District
Denver Federal Center
PO Box 25426
Denver, CO 80224-0426
6
Von Gunten opposition to Empire Aggregates, Inc. application for Sand &Gravel Mine
