First, it produces dirty <br />coal, which worsens air and climate pollution when it's burned. Second, to safely remove the coal from underground, the mine must <br />bulldoze a spider web of roads and pads within the Sunset Roadless Area in the Gunnison National Forest to remove combustible <br />methane. Third, the mine simply vents that methane — a potent greenhouse gas — into the air without capturing or burning it. The <br />West Elk coal mine has been the largest single industrial source of methane pollution in Colorado for years. <br />For a healthy future, <br />M.J.
