established. But new revegetation areas are especially prone to weed invasion. For small areas of
invasion(less than about 1,000 square feet) herbicides can be applied by the land owner. But for larger
areas it is far better to call in a professional weed control agent to deal with the invasion. They have the
experience as well as access to herbicides that are sometimes much more effective than the herbicides a
landowner can purchase.
The important point here is that so long as a reclamation project on a mine is strongly infested
with noxious weeds there is little chance the reclamation program will ever be approved followed by
release of the financial warranty. The Colorado Noxious Weed Act requires that some species be
completely eradicated while other species are allowed to persist if the numbers of individuals are low and
the condition of the land is such that a noxious weed eruption is not likely to happen. The law requires
that each landowner be responsible for controlling noxious weeds on their property. If control is not
done the county can send in a crew to do the control for the landowner and the landowner is then billed
for the cost, which is almost punitively high when they do it. Better to do what is required yourself.
Inspections for noxious weeds should be done by someone who is familiar with the different
species and knows when the appearance of some weeds are going to be a problem. Such inspections
shall occur at least three (3)times a growing season for the first two years and in late Spring and late
Summer in subsequent years. A written report with general locations of weeds and weed populations
will be produced to allow future assessment of expansion of weed occurrences or new invasions. This is
best done on foot with a GPS that takes waypoints of coordinates for future reference if needed by a
professional weed control agent. It makes their work easier and saves money on weed management if
they know beforehand where the serious weeds are located.
Vollmer Pit Technical Revision June 2018 Updated Reclamation Plan Page 26 of 26
