This treatment of the exposed original surface after complete removal of the berm will continue
to be done as the removal occurs from east to west. But once seeded, care must be given to not redisturb
an already seeded area or it may need to be done again.
Remember this: As pointed out in the next Reclamation Unit, it is also necessary to reclaim
any exposed cut faces next to and south of the reclamation of the location where the berm was located.
In nearly all instances the reclamation of the cut face and the former land under the berm needs to be
done together.
Reclamation of any portions of the remaining berm structure will be an action separate from the
reclamation of land where the berm has been completely removed.
There are many excellent large trees on the berm. However, most are growing on rather steep
slopes. Thus preserving these trees by transplanting elsewhere would be challenging. But if any can be
saved by making them available to landscapers who are equipped to move mature pinyon pines, that
would be a good reutilization of these trees. This is not required, but will be done when possible.
Otherwise the trees must be destroyed. However, it will also be kept in mind that tree branches and
trunks make excellent erosion control features on steeper slopes subject to erosion such as the south
facing slopes of the berm. That said, consideration should be given to the fact that at sometime a road
will likely run through the area of the berm and leaving tree debris might just increase the cost of that
project. Thus, these are suggestions for effective utilization of the trees rather than simply cutting them
up and putting in the landfill or selling the wood.
However, it is required that these trees may not be buried in slopes created to comply with other
slope requirements. Decay of the buried trees can create hollows and dangerous areas where the soil can
collapse resulting in injuries to people walking across the land in the distant future. In other words, the
trees must be removed from the site or utilized for wildlife purposes in a way that does not create a fire
hazard as occurs with stacks of dead wood.
Vollmer Pit Technical Revision June 2018 Updated Reclamation Plan Page 15 of 26
