COLORADO
Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
May 24, 2018
Internal Memo
To: Brock Bowles, DRMS
From: Tabetha Lynch, DRMS
Re: New Horizon North Mine (Permit No. C-2010-089)
Technical Revision No. 16 (TR -16)
Adequacy Review
As requested I have reviewed the above referenced revision relevant to the proposed changes to the
groundwater monitoring plan.
The revision proposes to remove the NW Nest of monitoring wells (GW -47 underburden, GW -48 Dakota Coal,
and GW -49 overburden). These wells are located north of Glasier and Meehan Draws in an area that has not
been mined and are neither upstream nor downstream of disturbed areas. Based on available data the
groundwater in the area generally flow from northeast to southwest. GW -47, GW -48, and GW -49 do not serve
as points of compliance. These wells were installed to be adjacent to a mining area that is no longer intended or
approved to be mined. I have reviewed the 2017 Annual Hydrology Report AHR and the analyte graphs
provided in Appendix 4 of that AHR, and there is no indication that there has been any impacts from mining to
this area.
I have no adequacy items with respect to removing these wells from the monitoring program at this time.
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http://mining.state.co.us
John W.
