(Pinyon), to conduct a biological
resources assessment and informal delineation of potential Waters of the U.S. (WUS), including wetlands, for
the Hunt Slurry Wall Proposed Alignment Project (project). The purpose of this project is to install a slurry
wall in an area currently being used as an agricultural field. The proposed project is located approximately three
miles south of Gilcrest and approximately three miles north of Platteville in Weld County, Colorado (Figure
1). The study area is approximately 157 acres of land currently used primarily for agricultural purposes (sod
production). Some structures related to oil and gas production, as well as one commercial business, are also
located within the study area. This Biological Resources Technical Memorandum (memo) summarizes the
existing biological resources and potential wetland areas within the study area.
Project Location
The proposed project is located near the intersection of Highway(HWY) 85 and County Road (CR) 36(Figure
I and Figure 2). The study area is divided and occurs both east and west of HWY 85. The approximate
geographical location of the project is centered at decimal degree coordinates (World Geodetic System of
1984 [WGS84]) latitude 40.250345°, -104.813634° longitude. The project is located in Sections 5 and 6,
Township 3 North, Range 66 West of the 6th Principal Meridian on the United States Geological Survey(USGS)
Milliken and Platteville, Colorado 7.5-Minute Quadrangles (USGS, 1969a and 1969b, respectively). The
topography of the study area is mostly flat, with an approximate elevation of 4,800 feet above mean sea level
(msl).
Methods
Pinyon biologist Brandee Anderson visited the site on March 25, 2018, to assess the study area for biological
resources and informally delineate potential wetlands. Ms. Anderson surveyed the study area for protected
species and their habitats, including threatened and endangered species; raptors and other migratory birds;and
other biological resources. During the site visit, a Trimble Geo XH-6000 global positioning system (GPS) unit
was used to record relevant information. Notes and photographs were taken to record field conditions. A
photographic log is included in the attachments.
Additionally, Ms. Anderson conducted an informal delineation of potential WUS, including potential wetland
areas, by using the presence of hydrophytic wetland vegetation indicators for the presence of hydric soils and
wetland hydrology. Wetland vegetation is assigned indicator ratings by the United States Army Corps of
