Rule 2: Permits
availability and other factors. Of prime importance to changing seed. mixtures and rates will be the
evaluation of initial revegetation success.
Land Management
Noxious Plant Control
Mine disturbed areas will be monitored for infestations of Noxious Weeds, including Scotch and
musk thistle, Canadian thistle, hounds tongue, and loco weed.
Whenever practical, mechanical control (cutting, tilling, grazing, etc) will be the control of
preference. At adjacent mine sites, mechanical control of hounds tongue, loco weed. and Scotch and
musk thistle has been found to be effective.
More aggressive infestations have been effectively controlled with Roundup mixed @ 2.66 oz. per
gallon of water, applied directly on the plant. As this is a non -restricted pesticide/herbicide, Roundup
will be the preferred method of chemical control for annual and biannual thistle infestations.
Mechanical control of Canadian thistle, a perennial, generally is ineffective. Thus, Canadian thistle
will be controlled by an application of either Milestone, Banvel (dicamba) or a combination of 0.5
qt. Banvel plus 1.0 qt. of 2,4-D where Banvel alone proves ineffective.
The following table provides a list of target noxious weeds and Dr. Beck's (CSU) recommended
herbicide.
Noxious Weed
Herbicide
African rue (Class A weed)
Polaris
Diffuse knapweed
Milestone
Russian knapweed
Milestone
Spotted knapweed
Milestone
Leafy spurge
Tordon
Dalmatian toadflax
Milestone
Yellow toadflax
Tordon
Musk thistle
Milestone
Scotch Thistle
Milestone
Canadian Thistle
Milestone
Hounds tongue
Milestone
Livestock Grazing Controls
Livestock grazing will be restricted during operations and the reclamation liability period. Timing of
grazing will be determined jointly by LCC and the CDMG. Livestock damage to revegetation will be
controlled as necessary by selective fencing or other management techniques. Normal range
management practices will be used as necessary to enhance the value of revegetated areas.
TR -20 Page 2.05-71 5-4-2018
