PERMIT #: M-2016-076
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE: May 1, 2018
Regional groundwater flow direction is believed to be from SW to NE, toward and slightly parallel to the
South Plate River, which is located to the east of the permitted mine sites and flows north. As can be seen on
the attached map, the wells reporting impacts are located west and northwest of the permitted sites. This, in
conjunction with the slurry walls and distance from the wells to the mine sites, makes it very unlikely that the
permitted operations are impacting the complainant's wells.
This time of year (early spring) is considered to be the annual low point for groundwater levels in the area.
There has been very little rain or snow this winter, and irrigation ditches are not yet running, resulting in
minimal recharge to the shallow aquifer. It is very likely that the shallow alluvial aquifer on top of the terrace
is experiencing lower levels than usual.
AIthough DRMS acknowledges that the shallow wells located on the historic terrace are having difficulty
producing at levels they might have historically, based on the information obtained and observations made
during this inspection, DRMS does not believe that this is a result of impacts from mining activity. DRMS
believes that this issue is much more likely a combination of the shallow well construction and regional low
groundwater levels in the shallow alluvial aquifer on the historic western terrace due to seasonal influences.
Inspection Contact Address
Mark Johnson
Bestway Concrete Company
301 Centennial Drive
Milliken, CO 80543
