Technical Memorandum
Liner Integrity Engineering Support
VLF2 Geomembrane Recertification
NewFields Job No. 475.0106.023
April 10, 2018
Remove all the material to within 2 feet of the geomembrane surface. The initial area of ore
removal is approximately 142' wide and 438' long, and is depicted by the black rectangle.
During the removal of the ore, the contractor and NewFields' QA/QC personnel will complete
inspections to determine the condition of the existing drain cover fill (DCF), solution collection
piping, and geomembrane. if damaged liner or piping is observed during the excavation, the
area will be further investigated to determine the extent of the damage.
f After the material has been removed, several test pits will be carefully dug by small
excavation equipment and hand labor to expose the liner. The test pits should be
approximately 2' in diameter. NewFields QA/QC personnel will document the condition of
the geomembrane. The holes should be left open until the pot holing activities are
completed.
o As shown on Figure 2, the test pits should initially space 20'.
o As the test pitting activities moves down the slope, the spacing of the test pits
should be decreased 10', within the area of primary concern, which is depicted by
the green hatch.
Additional test pitting will also be completed in any damaged areas to define the extent of
the damage.
The location and spacing of the test pits shown on Figure 2 maybe altered based on field
conditions.
Once the test pitting is completed, NewFields Certifying Engineer and CC&V's personnel will
examine the area of the slide verifying the condition of the geomembrane. If required,
additional test pits will be dug to examine the geomembrane.
If no defects are located, NewFields will document the backfilling of drain cover material over the
exposed geomembrane liner.
If defects are located, NewFields will document the repair of the holes and the backfilling of the
drain cover material over the exposed geomembrane liner.
In either case and upon completion of the work, a certified report will be developed summarizing
all the work completed.
P:\Projects\0106.023 CC&V Une Integrity Engineering SupportV REPORTS\VLF2 Geamembrane Recertification, Fina' day
Page 2
