4. Topsoil and Overburden Handling
The total current, as of October 2017, disturbed area for the gold mining operation is 114.5 acres
with a total mine life disturbance area of 189.2 acres. Of this amount, 90.3 acres were disturbed
pre-1977 and no topsoil was salvaged. Approximately 65.5 acres of new disturbance, as of
October 2017,will occur if all planned mine cuts are disturbed. The table below shows the
combination of pre-law and post-law disturbance.
4_1 Disturbed Permit Areas (October 2017)
Area Acreage
Active Mining Areas 4.0
Berm along Highway 9 2.8
Topsoil Stockpiles 2.8
Site Roads 2.0
Pre-law Area (includes italicized areas above) 90.3
Post-law areas outside of active cuts 15.8
Willit's Ponds and West of Gumaer areas 4.2
Total Disturbed Area 114.5
It should be noted that this disturbed area is the total for the mine life and is represented by a light
blue cyan boundary on Map C-2. Furthermore, that the affected area is the pen-nit area and is
represented by the permit boundary shown in purple on Map C-2.
As mining and reclamation will occur concurrently, a total of six areas will be disturbed at any
given time. Two areas will be actively mined, two areas in advance of the active mining area will
be stripped of topsoil and overburden in preparation for mining, and two areas behind the active
mining areas will in reclamation.
Therefore, the total area of active mining, as of October 2017, at any one time will not exceed 7
acres. Exact acreage of mining exclusive disturbance is dependent on the rate of mining and
concurrent reclamation. Currently active mining faces combined with those areas still to be
mined totals 67.7 acres. Therefore, the maximum site disturbance as of October 2017 is 114.5
Alma Placer Mine
December 2017 D-10
