Summary
The Review Process
CAM Mining, LLC submitted the renewal application for the Munger Canyon Mine on March 1,
2018. The Division found the application complete on March 1, 2018. The mine is in permanent
cessation and has been completely reclaimed. Final reclamation of the site, with the exception of
hydrologic controls was completed in 2007. After the Division found that the reclaimed site was not
contributing addition sedimentation, TR25, the Division approved reclamation of the sediment pond.
The sediment pond was reclaimed in 2014. The permittee anticipates submittal of final bond release
application in 2018.
After review of the permit renewal application no. 7, the Division found the permit in compliance
with no identified compliance concerns.
Description of the Environment
The Munger Canyon Mine is located in Garfield County, Colorado, approximately 20 miles
north of Loma on Colorado Highway 139. The permit area encompasses 1538.8 acres. Existing
affected area (mine area) is approximately 39.6 acres. Existing disturbed area in the mine area
is approximately 21.2 acres. The mine is considered a Federal Mine with 1,373.2 acres surface
lands Federally owned, and 1,378.8 mineral acres Federally owned. The remaining surface area,
165.6 acres are privately owned, and 160.0 mineral acres are in private ownership. There is no State
or County ownership of surface or mineral acreage.
Geology and Topography
The mine site is located at an elevation of approximately 5800 feet. Munger Canyon is located
in the Book Cliffs, just north of Grand Valley. This area is northeast of the Garmesa Anticline
and on the south flank of the Piceance basin. Local strata dip to the northeast into the Piceance
basin at one to three degrees and strike north-northwest. No faults have been identified in the
Munger Canyon mine plan area. The adjacent McClave Canyon Mine (north of the Munger
Canyon Mine) is located within a graben structure which is bounded by two large, high -angle
displacement faults.
The Mount Garfield Formation is the coal -bearing formation in the Book Cliffs Coal Field.
The Mount Garfield Formation consists of fine-grained and medium grained sandstones and
gray shales. The Sego Sandstone underlies the Mount Garfield Formation and the Hunter
Formation overlies it. Included within the Hunter Formation are the massive cliff -forming
sandstones which outcrop along the canyon walls of East Salt Creek. The Mount Garfield
Formation contains four coal zones; the Loma, Carbonera, Cameo and Palisade Zones. The Cameo
seam was mined at the Munger Canyon Mine. Originally, mining was proposed within both the
Cameo and Upper Carbonera seams.
4
