Seed mix number 7 is for the cropland — irrigated alfalfa hay. A companion crop of
triticale or an alternative winter annual grain will be seeded along with the alfalfa.
Seed mix number 8 is for the dryland pasture. It is a combination of introduced and
native species that are drought tolerant. A sterile hybrid annual triticale will be planted
in combination with all areas seeded to dryland pasture.
B. Soil Stabilizing Practices
The Division proposes to approve the use of a cover crop as a means to meet soil
stabilization requirements in situations where temporary soil stabilization is required
prior to seeding with the permanent mix (4.15.4).
C. Husbandry Practices
The Division proposes to approve certain management activities as normal husbandry
practices that may be conducted without re -initiating the liability period (4.15.7(5)).
These practices were approved based on consultation with and written recommendation
from the NRCS regarding normal and appropriate husbandry practices for the subject
land uses in the Nucla area.
1. All prime farmlands will be returned to cropland — irrigated alfalfa hay. Table
2.05.4(2)(e)-3 outlines the management schedule for the cropland. Irrigation
designs are discussed in Subsection 5.2 and shown on Map 2.05.3(3)-3. Irrigation
will be a combination of side roll sprinklers and center pivots. Irrigation designs
and water usage rates are presented in Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-7. The NRCS has
provided documentation that the fertilization and irrigation rates and methods are
appropriate as documented in their letter dated October 1, 2010 in Attachment
2.05.4(2)(e)-11.
2. The reclaimed irrigated pastureland will use sprinkler irrigation. Map 2.05.3(3)-3
shows the irrigation layouts. Calculations and irrigation designs are shown in
Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-9. Fertilization will be done annually, at NRCS
recommended rates. In addition, interseeding for the purpose of improving stand
composition may be utilized during the first 6 years of the liability period. NRCS
has provided documentation that the irrigation and fertilization rates are
appropriate as seen in Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-11 of the permit.
3. On the reclaimed dryland pasture, interseeding for the purpose of improving stand
composition may be utilized during the first 4 years of the liability period. NRCS
documentation for interseeding as a normal husbandry practice is provided in
Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-11 of the permit.
D. Comparisons between reclaimed and undisturbed areas, in order to demonstrate that
success criteria of 4.15.8, 4.15.9, or 4.15.10 have been met, will be based on the
following:
27
