III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII999
Doc Date:12/11/2001
Is 4 Z.4 FISH AND WILDLIFE
Trapper Mine environmental personnel met with local Bureau of Land Management,
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Colorado Division of Wildlife personnel to
obtain agency input on animal species of importance and specific concepts to
be addressed in the fish and wildlife portions of this permit application.
Several additional contacts were made with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
and the Colorado Division of Wildlife to determine the acceptability of pre -
and post -mining monitoring -methods and for mitigation techniques. Appendix E
includes the correspondence and a summary of the meetings held with the vari-
ous agencies as well as inventory methods and data.
2.4.1 Species Inventory
Vegetation, coupled with other environmental factors influences the composi-
tion, abundance, and distribution of wildlife. Some wildlife species may be
directly associated with a particular plant community or vegetative type while
others may be found in a variety of communities or vegetative types depending
on the time of the year. 1 Essentially three major and three minor habitat
`types occur within the mine plan area and adjacent areas. The major vegeta-
tion communities include stands of sagebrush -grass, mountain shrub, and crop-
lands. Within the sagegrass and mountain shrub-types,s,sur-face manipul'at'ions
such as burning, spraying and abandoning croplands, have produced minor areas
of predominately grass with some shrubs. Pinyon -juniper, rocky barren areas%
Cand grass -shrub areas rcomprise--the minor sites. In addition to the above
vegetative expressions, springs, seeps, and stock water containments provide
variety within the general habitats for wild fauna.
Baseline data compiled by Ecology Consultants Inc. (Appendix E) and studies
and incidental sightings by Trapper environmental personnel provide the basis
for a species list for the mine plan and adjacent areas. No special survey
has been conducted on the herptofauna, arthropods or bat populations of the
2-123
