This map is
the result of both a desktop analysis and field delineation of the vegetation and land cover in the PR -7
Mine Expansion Area. The results show that for the 795.71 acres within the PR -7 Mine Expansion Area
vegetation study area, there are six different vegetation or land cover types.
• Mountain Shrub covering 637.33 acres;
• Grassland covering 81.69 acres, with a Wetland subtype containing 5.28 acres;
• Big Sagebrush covering 54.03 acres;
• Aspen covering 15.12 acres;
• Home Sites covering 2.09 acres; and
• Ponds covering 0.17 acres.
Based on the CDRMS Vegetation Guideline, vegetation sampling is only required for plant
communities which make up more that 5% of the permit area or are more than 10 acres whichever is
smaller. In the case of the PR -7 Mine Expansion Area, 5% is approximately 39.8 acres. Based on these
criteria, there are three major plant communities within the PR -7 Mine Expansion Area including
Mountain Shrub, Grassland, and Big Sagebrush - 54.03 acres. Approval was obtained from the CDRMS
in the consultation meetings to not sample the Aspen plant community as it is outside of the proposed
mine disturbance area.
The sampling results for the three major communities are summarized in the following sections.
Appendix D VI contains a detailed discussion of the sampling results which also includes a discussion
of the minor plant communities present in the PR -7 Mine Expansion Area.
Mountain Shrub Plant Community
This vegetation type is widespread in the PR -7 Mine Expansion Area and is found on all slopes and
aspects. This is the largest plant community type found within the PR -7 Mine Expansion Area that will
potentially be disturbed by mining. This area covers an area of approximately 637.13 acres and
2-122m
