L <br />At each sample point the sighting device was directed vertically upward <br />if overstory vegetation was present and then downward into the understory <br />community. The first hit along a vertical line was recorded as vegeta- <br />tion (by speciesi, rock, litter, or soil. When vegetation was intercepted <br />on the first hit additional hits were taken until soil, litter, or rock <br />was intercepted. First hits were used in calculating the absolute percent <br />cover. <br />2.4.2 Collection and Analysis of Production Data <br />The above ground plant biomass of the current year's growth <br />was estimated for each study area by clipping a maximum of 50 quadrats. <br />Production quadrats were circular in shape and encompassed one square <br />meter in area. Within each quadrat the current year's growth of herb- <br />aceous plants was clipped and sorted by individual graminoids, per major <br />forb species, and per a general forb category. Cacti and shrubs <br />were not clipped. The clipped material was oven dried 1105oC for 24 <br />hours) and weighed to the nearest tenth of a gram. Production was expressed <br />in grams per square meter, kilograms per hectare, and pounds per acre. <br />2.4.3 Collection and Analysis of Shrub and Tree Data <br />A rectangular shaped quadrat 1 m by 10 m in size and located <br />• along the cover transect was used to determine shrub density. The number <br />of individual shrubs rooted within the quadrat was recorded by species. <br />Density was expressed for each ~pecies and for the total of al 1. species <br />as the number per quadrat (10 m i, the number per hectare, and the number <br />per acre. <br />1 <br />• <br />The height of all shrubs within the quadrat were measured to <br />the nearest centimeter. This daTa was used to determine the mean height <br />lcmi and percent composition per study area. <br />The height and diameter-at-breast-height IDBH) of all trees <br />present within the study areas were respectively measured per species in <br />meter and centimeter units. <br />2.5 PLANT SPECIES COLLECTION AND IDENTIFICATION <br />Plant species were collected and pressed during field activities in July and <br />August 1982. Specimens were identified by field ecologists conducting the <br />study and confirmed by Dr. William A. Weber, Curator of the Herbarium, <br />University of Colorado. Taxonomic nomenclature follows Weber and Johnston <br />(19791. Nickerson et al. 119761 and Beetle (1970) were consulted in an <br />attempt to apply the most widely utilized common names. Noxious weed <br />designators follow Thornton et al. (19741. Statements of origin follow <br />Weber and Johnston 119791. Voucher specimens have been preserved in a <br />reference collection. <br />~ -3- <br />
