2.05.2 Operation Plan - Estimated Area for Life of Operation <br />• Room -and -pillar mining methods were used in recovering coal reserves within <br />the permit area, including the Roadside North and South Portal areas. Modern mining <br />equipment and procedures were employed to mine the coal. Major equipment <br />included continuous miners, shuttle cars, continuous haulage units, roof bolters, and <br />conveyor belts. <br />A Logical Mining Unit, LMU application was submitted to BLM in the fall of 1994 <br />requesting the combination of the five federal leases controlled by Powderhorn. This <br />LMU boundary is shown on Exhibit 5. Mining projections in the application include <br />mining in Sections 32 and 33, T10S, R98W, 6th PM. No mining was performed in <br />these sections. <br />The Roadside North and South Portals were developed using three to seven <br />entries for all mains and sub -mains, and three entries for panel bleeders. The entries <br />Is <br />were eighteen to twenty feet wide. Entries were developed on 50 to 120 foot centers <br />and crosscuts developed on 50 to 200 foot centers depending on the mining <br />conditions. <br />Room and pillar panels were developed using three to six entries. Rooms were <br />driven perpendicular to these panels up to 600 feet from the centerline of the panel or <br />to within 50 feet of the property line. Pillar extraction, where used, utilized pillar <br />slabbing procedures similar to wing and pocket recovery. Continuous haulage panels <br />were driven using four to seven entries and generally had crosscuts mined on 60° <br />angles. <br />Resin roof bolts were the primary means of roof support. The use of cribs and <br />wood posts were used as secondary means of roof support. MSHA approved roof <br />control plans were followed at both mines. <br />. The primary means of ventilation for both mines was exhaust fans. Separation <br />of the air flow between the intakes, the belt, and the return entries was made using <br />Volume 3 Tab 12 12-1 5/00 <br />
