observe potential for subsurface cultural fill as well as stratigraphic profiling (Figures 3-6, Plate
1). Sediment grain size, sorting, edaphic factors (soil structure and caliche), and the
geochemical character of the deposits were observed within the stratigraphy of the excavated
trench walls.
Trowels, brushes, and whisk brooms were primarily used to excavate three of the
trenches (Test Trenches 1, 3 and 4). Excavation proceeded in arbitrary 5cm levels as measured
from present ground surface at the test pit corner stake highest in elevation. Final depth of
excavation reached a maximum of approximately 30cm. Test Trench 2 was not excavated.
In search of cultural materials, all excavated sediment (from auger tests and test
trenches) was sifted through 1/8 -inch mesh rocker screens. Recovered artifacts were described
in field notes with approximate depth below present ground surface, test trench, shovel test, or
auger test location, and were assigned an "FS" number. As with other artifacts at the site, only
those deemed appropriate were collected. Soil samples were collected as warranted.
Following excavation, all collected cultural material was transported back to Grand River
Institute for processing and analysis. All collected artifacts will be returned to the landowner
and the written records will be filed with the BLM.
Features
Near the southernmost portion of the site, three rock walls generally define the remains
of a structure (Feature 1). The walls are constructed of local sandstone rocks and slabs. The
highest wall is three courses high. The collapsed remains of the southwestern wall are visible
to the west and outside the structure and are mostly buried and overgrown. The doorway
appears to have been located in the center of the southwestern wall. Two large, tabular pieces
of fieldstone may represent the remains of the door stoop. Test Trenches 1 through 4 were
established through the center of this feature. The northeastern corner of Test Trench 4 was
established at 26 meters south and 8.5 meters east of the datum.
Feature 2, a pile of sandstone boulders, is located less than six meters northwest of
Feature 1. The rocks are significantly overgrown with vegetation and covered by soil.
Artifacts
The site contains both historic and prehistoric cultural material. Evidence of a
prehistoric occupation is limited to a sparse quantity of artifacts: one heat reddened cobble
mano (previously recorded), five flakes (one of which is questionable), and one chert chunk.
Of these, only the mano was recorded on the ground surface. The lithic artifacts were recorded
from subsurface contexts ranging from 0 to 30 centimeters below present ground surface.
An array of historic artifacts was recorded from both surface and subsurface contexts.
Milled lumber fragments, deteriorated food can fragments, and one stove part were visible on
the ground surface.
11
