Historic research produces multiple documents possibly associated to the site. A
General Land Office (GLO) plat, surveyed in 1910, shows a "house" in the same area of the
site. The house is not indicated on the 1887 map. The GLO had one land patent on file for the
site area: a Homestead Entry (original) assigned to a Homer Leighter in 1919. Additionally, the
Colorado Decision Support Systems database was searched for information pertaining to the
reservoir next to the site. The reservoir is the Velanzas Livestock Pond 1 and is situated along
Jeffway Gulch. It was appropriated in August of 1940, and adjudicated in April of 1942. The
pond also appears on the 1971 Breeze Mountain Quad. United States Census records from the
year 1940 indicate that family with the last name of Velanzas were residents of Moffat County.
Members of the Velanzas family included Thomas (head of family, age 52), Autrey (wife, age
48), Bob (son, age 16), and Polly (daughter, age 7). Thomas Velanzas immigrated from
Greece, however his wife and children were born in the United States. The family's occupation
is listed as "Sheep Herders" on the census. The exact purpose, culture, and time period of the
site's construction remains unclear as none of the previously discussed historic documents
provide direct Association.
Additionally, a prehistoric component, a mano, was recorded near a large sandstone
boulder in the northeastern portion of the site. The mano is a quartzitic cobble and exhibits
oxidation, bifacial grinding, and evidence of battering. It was found in a disturbed area and
may be indicative of buried prehistoric cultural remains; however, no additional prehistoric
manifestations were observed.
Data recovery was conducted on July 30', August 5`h, 7`n, 25`n through 27`h, and
September I I 1 of 2015. Prior to excavation, the surface of the site was cleared of vegetation
with a string trimmer (weed whacker) and re -mapped in detail using a BLM certified Trimble
Geo XT GPS unit. Surface artifacts within the site were also mapped using the Trimble unit,
but were not collected. The site was then metal detected within an area of approximately
900m2 at high (multiple signals every two feet) and low (one signal every three to five feet)
densities. Artifacts recovered during metal detection were designated an "FS" number.
Individual artifact locations were plotted using the Trimble and depth below present ground
surface was noted. Only those artifacts that were deemed useful in interpretive analysis were
collected.
A permanent datum point was established on a boulder in the northeastern most portion
of the site. The datum was plotted on the map with the Trimble GPS unit and marked with a
metal pin (Figure 2). A total of 22 auger tests and six shovel tests was conducted within the
site. Fourteen of the auger tests were conducted in relation to the datum. Auger Tests 1
through 9 were conducted in 5 meter intervals directly north (AT's 1-3) and south (AT's 4-9)
of the datum. The remaining five auger tests near the datum (AT's 10-14) were conducted in
intuitive locations and mapped using the Trimble GPS unit. Eight auger tests (ATR's 1-8)
were placed in intuitive locations near Feature 2 and also mapped with the GPS unit. The
shovel tests were placed in intuitive locations within and to the southwest of Feature 1. Four
test trenches were established in a linear east to west fashion through the center of Feature 2 to
E
