Datum points
were established, and the proposed testing procedures were undertaken. These variously
included shovel and auger hole excavation, trenching and in some cases, grid unit excavation.
The auger tool used produced a round hole approximately 10cm in diameter and holes
were dug to a depth that reached bedrock. Each removed sample was spread out in the shaker
screen for analysis. With the aid of a metric tape measure inserted into the auger hole, the
depths for changes in soil color or texture and inclusions such as charcoal, ash, or artifacts
could be ascertained within a few centimeters. Shovel tests were conducted in a similar
manner with the soils screened through 1/8 -inch hardware cloth shaker screens.
Excavation at the few designated grid units took place by 10cm arbitrary levels as
measured from the grid unit corner stake highest in elevation. When present, excavation
controls were shifted to natural or cultural stratigraphic levels. Fill within formal cultural
features was excavated and recorded as separate units. All cultural specimens were collected.
Detailed plan maps and profile views were drawn, and photographs were taken at each feature
or excavation locus.
All lithic debitage and chipped and ground stone tools that were found in situ were
indicated on plan and/or profile maps, recorded as to depth below present ground surface
(PGS), and bagged as individual field specimens (FSs). Other artifacts and ancillary specimens
were bagged in aggregate, and labeled by unit and level, or feature number. A field specimen
list was compiled for each site. Soils, macro -botanical, pollen, and carbon samples were
collected as warranted.
Tables, by site, providing the auger test data, the grid test data, the maximum depth
below the present ground surface (pgs) reached, and a description of the deposits and artifactual
materials recovered are provided in Appendix A. Each test location was subsequently placed
on the site plan maps.
7
