obvious that what was visible prior to the removal of these stones. An unconformity in the fill
outside of the feature where the less consolidated upper fill becomes slightly more compacted
at approximately 20cm below the present ground surface possibly represents an associated
living surface, or a natural deflation surface. However, this surface was not documented either
as a soil change or a disconformity in the profiled walls of excavations anywhere else on the
site.
Various portions of Test Pit 3 were cleared to depths of 20 to 37cm (Figure 6, Profile
D -D'; and Figure 7, Profile E -E'). The fill in ST5 and TP3 (the Feature 2 Locus) consisted of
dark brown (1 OYR 3/3) silty clay to a depth of 32-38cm where fractured and decomposing
sandstone was contacted the upper surface of the underlaying bedrock. The upper 5-6cm of the
deposit was less compacted than that below. A faint and discontinuous layer of unconsolidated
grayish brown fill (apparently decomposed organic matter) was noted at 5-7cm in portions of
the units.
N4 0 S
E
- E'
PGS
c. , • ' +►
PGS
upright slabs
•=
slightly darker soil
Fe 2 asp
atys
4®.
with pockets of
• • ..m
;
charcoal
- unoxidized sandstone possible floor of
® = oxidized sandstone Feature 2 %
20cm
❑ = excavated fill
Figure 6.
