apparent that the trench has cut into the base of the undisturbed talus—effectively the northern <br />boundary of the site. <br />In the southern, cultural, portion of this unit 2 flakes were recovered from the 0-10cm <br />level (115), 2 flakes (FS 119), and a fragment of a small, unnotched projectile point with a <br />convex base (FS 120) from 10-20cm, 1 flake from 20-30cm (FS 125), and no cultural materials <br />from 30cm to the contact with bedrock at 50cm. Excavation was halted at 50cm. Within the <br />cultural fill, there existed an inordinately large number of small -to -medium sized, heavily <br />oxidized sandstone pebbles from the present ground surface to approximately 25cm in depth, <br />but, again, randomly distributed in the fill. <br />Test Trench 3, a 25cm wide by lm long, east -west, trench was opened to the east of <br />TTI, B-3 for the purpose of further examining the nature of the deposits in that portion of TTI <br />where a spent core (FS 111), a biface (FS 122), a projectile point base (FS 123), a biface <br />midsection (FS 124), and a metate fragment (FS 133) were found at depths ranging from 13 to <br />42cm below pgs. Although 10 flakes were found at 0-1Ocm (FS 168), 7 at 10-20cm, and 11 at <br />20-30cm (FS 177), no other evidence of an activity area or artifact concentration was revealed. <br />9.4 Grid -oriented Test Pits <br />A series of three test pits were excavated on the site in locations where the results of the <br />auger and shovel testing produced indications of potential thermal features as described above. <br />All tests were conducted in arbitrary 10cm levels and collected as such until indications of <br />natural or cultural stratigraphy or potential living surfaces were encountered at which time <br />excavation was shifted to these layers. Excavated fill was screened through 1/4" or 1/8" mesh <br />screens as noted. Unless otherwise noted, the color, texture, and nature of the soils in these <br />tests matched that in nearby auger tests (Table A-1). <br />Test Pits 1 and 2 (involved the excavation of the NE, SW, and SE quadrants of a lm <br />square with its southwest corner at 13.5N/2E). Test Pits 1 and 2 were opened adjacent to <br />Shovel Test 2 for the purpose of further investigating the significant number of flakes (23) and <br />what was, at the time, perceived as an appreciable amount of heat -reddened fragments of <br />sandstone uncovered in that test. Test Pit 1 consisted of a 1 in x 50cm excavation unit to the <br />south and southwest of ST2 and 50cm square Test Pit 2 expanded the east half of TP 1 to the <br />north, encompassing the shovel test itself (Figure 4). It was anticipated that the density of the <br />oxidized rock found in ST2 reflected the presence of a nearby thermal feature. <br />19 <br />
