Segment 5MF7402.1, 3033 meters (1.9 miles) long, was originally recorded in May
of 2011 by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants. It was described as an unnamed historic
road segment that appeared on the 1913 General Land Office plat. Metcalf broke the road
segment into sub -segments A through F based on their age, visibility, and integrity. Sub-
segment A was described as an abandoned two -track road in poor condition. Sub -segment B
was disturbed by vegetal overgrowth. Sub -segment C was a two -track road used for
recreation. Sub -segments D and E were modern crowned and ditched roads following the
original historic route. Sub -segment F was a lightly used two -track road. The entire segment
was field evaluated as not eligible for listing on the NRHP (Jennings and Hogrefe 2011).
Metcalf revisited the site a month later; no changes to the segment or to the evaluation were
made (Jennings and Swanson 2011). The segment was declared officially not eligible in July
of 2011.
Segment 5MF7402.2, 1620 meters (1 miles) of 5MF7402.1, was originally recorded
in June of 2013 by Grand River Institute. It included sub -segments A, B, and C of the
previous recording. Sub -segments A, C, and portions of sub -segment B could not be
relocated due to dense vegetal overgrowth. The segment was field evaluated as a non -
supporting element of a need data resource (Conner, et al. 2013).
Grand River Institute revisited the entire length of both previously recorded segments
during the present project, and an additional 82 meters of the historic road was newly
recorded. As the previously recorded segments were revisited in their entirety, 5MF7402.1
will be extended 82 meters to the north to include the newly documented portion of the road.
Location data has been updated and the segment has been re -mapped and photographed. The
boundary has been updated and now measures 3115 by 6 meters.
The condition of the road has not changed since the previous segment recordings in
2011 and 2013. Sub -segments A, B, and C (as labeled in the 2011 recorded) are still faint
and heavily vegetated. Sub -segments D, E, F, and the newly recorded road extension are
relatively well defined sections of two -track road.
Evaluation and Management Recommendation
The site has not been fully documented. The present recording accounts for the
portion within the current inventory area. There may be additional portions in unsurveyed
areas and these may yield information important to the history/prehistory of the area
(Criterion D). In keeping with current Section 106 guidelines, the site is evaluated as
eligible. In regard to the segment presently updated: the integrity has been compromised due
to modern modifications and upkeep. The segment recorded herein is field evaluated as non -
supporting of the overall eligibility of the site. No further work is recommended.
Site 5MF7566.1, an historic wagon road segment and associated trash scatter, is
located on the west facing slope of Deacon Gulch. Elevation ranges from 6910 to 6980 feet.
20
