All cultural resources that qualify as sites, such as prehistoric open camps, lithic
scatters, occupied overhangs/rock shelters, and evidence of historic occupation, were
recorded and evaluated for determining eligibility for nomination to the NRNP as they were
encountered according to standards set by the BLM and the SHPO.
Data collection was conducted by the mapping of observed artifacts, artifact
concentrations, and features using a Trimble GeoXT GPS (accuracy is submeter) unit in
conjunction with USGS 7.5 minute series quadrangle maps that incorporated a 1000m grid.
Field notes were taken, including descriptions of the cultural manifestations, vegetation, and
soils. Field notes and photo negatives are on file at Grand River Institute, while the
photographs have been submitted to the BLM-LSFO. No artifacts were collected.
STUDY FINDINGS
Curtis Martin and Holly Shelton were responsible for the fieldwork, which was
performed between the 19`h of August and the 4`h of September 2013. Carl Conner (Principal
Investigator) oversaw the project. The land is privately owned; there were no restrictions due
to private land boundaries. Weather conditions during the project were good, with sunny
days and comfortable temperatures. The inventory was limited by heavy ground cover and
dense vegetation. Transitional Zone brush and grasses obscured 80 to 90 percent of the
ground (Plate 1).
Plate 1. Sample view of vegetation within project area.
16
