Topsoil from newly disturbed areas will be spread on previously reclaimed
areas. If there are no areas to reclaim as topsoil is being produced,-exeess-topsoil
from the western areas of Stages 2, 1, 5, and 6 will be stockpiled in Stage 6 or 7 as
appropriate. In the eastern areas of Stages 2, 4, and 5 topsoil will be stockpiled
along the northern, western, eastern or southern permit beundaffboundaries . The
majority north half of Stages 2 and 4 is devoid of topsoil because of prelaw mining
or because of disturbance caused by the sports cycle park.
After topsoil is removed, the overburden is mined and used to reclaim
mined areas. In the event there are no areas to reclaim as overburden is being
produced from Stage 8, excess overburden will largely be stockpiled west of the
mining operations and east of the topsoil stockpile in Stages 277 or 8 4, 5, and 7. If
there is no space available to stockpile overburden from Stage 8 then overburden
will be stockpiled in Stages 5 or 6. In the event there are no areas to reclaim as
overburden is being produced from Stages 4 or 6, excess overburden will be
stockpiled in Stages 5 or 6. The overburden stockpiles located near topsoil
stockpiles will be kept separate from the topsoil stockpiles. After the overburden is
removed, the clay will be mined and stockpiled.
The clays to be mined lie in almost vertical strata (70 to 80 degrees from
horizontal) which are interbedded with sandstone and coal seams. Clay stockpiles
will be located in east and south of the mining operation in Stages 2— and 4- .
Large volumes of sandstone and coal, called interburden, in the clay will
make the material unsuitable for the manufacture of brick. Approximately 40
percent of the pit volume is expected to produce interburden. Interburden is mined
in conjunction with the clay and used to reclaim mined areas. In the event there are
no areas to reclaim as interburden is being produced, excess overburden will
largely be stockpiled in Stages 5 or 6 and west of the topsoil stockpile. excess
northern, eastern or southern permit boundaries in Stages 2, 1-& 5 or in the eastern
12 Revised October 2017
