9

2.2.1.5 Mine Water Balance Table 2-2 shows the water balance for the Deserado Mine.
No water was pumped from underground workings between January 1996 and May of
2012. Pumping of excess mine water to the surface recommenced in May 2012.

During the 1996-1997 period, Deserado Mine started disposing the prep plant thickener
water in the mined out area of the D-Seam (the first longwall district). This water would
have been otherwise discharged through Pond PP-2.

Ingoing Water The production equipment utilizes water for dust control and cuttings
removal in roof bolting. Water used by equipment is based on 333 shifts worked by
continuous miner sections and 366 shifts worked by the longwall. The continuous miner
sections use 100 gpm and operate about 4 hours per shift (the rest of the time is spent
moving, etc.). The longwall equipment uses 200 gpm of water for about 8 hours per shift.

The amount of water entering the mine as ventilation intake air humidity is based on
monthly mean temperatures from Table II.C-1 on page II.C-5 of the Mining Permit and the
yearly mean relative humidity of 56% found on page II.E-1 of the Mining Permit. The
absolute humidity, the actual amount of water in the air, is calculated from these data
using an average ventilation quantity of 398,010 cubic feet per minute.

TABLE 2-2
MINE WATER BALANCE
WATER IN GALLONS/YR GALLONS/MIN
Production Equipment 43,128,000 82.05
Ventilation Humidity 8,468,149 16.11
Underground Storage of Thickener Water 2,760,000 5.25
Incidental (pipe leaks, road watering, wash down) 4,312,800 8.21
TOTAL 58,668,949 111.62
WATER OUT
Coal Surface Moisture 21,930,137 41.72
Ventilation Humidity 17,661,030 33.60
Pumped Out – B-Seam 18,656,488 35.50
Pumped Out – D-Seam 0 0
TOTAL 58,247,655 110.82
Net Water Left Underground 421,295 0.80
Water pumped from B seam to D seam 0 0
