The project site size is approximately 217.2 acres of
rangeland to be utilized for the purpose of extracting of mineral and natural resource extraction,
mining operation and processing, and the construction and operation, named the Big "G" Gravel
Pit. CPW has reviewed the information provided for the proposed permit application M-2006-
081-AMO1, Big "G" Gravel Pit. A site visit was conducted on January 15'h, 2018, by District
Wildlife Manager, Danny Lewis.
The mission Of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is to protect, preserve, enhance, and manage
wildlife and their environment for the use, benefit and enjoyment of the people of Colorado and
its visitors. One of the ways we achieve our mission is to comment on land use proposals such as
the request we received from your agency. Our goal is to provide complete, consistent and timely
information to all entities who request comment on matters within our statutory authority and our
mission.
CPW anticipates minimal wildlife impacts associated with the expansion of the Big "G" Gravel
Pit if the recommendations of this office are followed.
The site currently consists mostly of vacant rangeland with the Arkansas River just to the North
of the existing mine site. This wetland and riparian area near the project site is crucial wildlife
habitat and appears to not be included within the mining site. Wildlife found in the total
proposed area include mule deer, white-tailed deer, turkey, scaled quail, numerous raptors, neo -
tropical bird species, and numerous waterfowl near the existing river, and various small
mammals to name a few with the majority of these species occurring within the riparian corridor
of the Arkansas River. The Mining Plan should stipulate that no mining will occur in areas near
Bob U &MChOd, Dhaor, Cdorado Paft and ffidife . Parks arid Wtdlfe Comrnlsslare Robert W_ pray.
