alnifolia dominate the overstory while S. Oreophilus dominates the understory.
Based on 1979 and 1980 vegetative aerial cover, the dominant forbs in range site
(A) are Lathyrus leucanthus, Achillea lanulosa, and Stellari jamesiana. (Tables
2.3-2 and 2.3-3)
The 1979 cover data indicates that the dominant grass species are Poa fendleriana
and Poa pratensis. However, the 1980 vegetation data shows that Poa pratensis
and Agropyron smithii are the dominant grass species. In 1980, no Poa fendler-
iana was identified but 19 unidentified Poas were recorded which probably
included some Poa fendleriana.
In both years, 1979 and 1980, Carex grayeri has shown to be a major herbaceous
plant species. It is the only grass -like species to date sampled in the mountain
shrub range sites.
The other mountain shrub range site (B), is also dominated by shrubs (67.1% of
_ the total relative cover based on 1979 data). The remaining cover is evenly
divided between forbs and grasses with 1.5% relative cover by life form taken up
by grass like plants (Table 2.3-4).
The dominant shrub in this range site by cover is Symphoricarpos oreophilus based
on 1979 cover data. In terms of stem density the dominant shrubby species are
Quercus gambellii and Symphoricarpos oreophilus (Table 2.3-15). However, range
site (B) was not sampled adequately statistically for cover by species in 1979
with the five cover transects used. It was sampled at the proper statistical
intensity for total cover though as required by OSM regulations. Therefore, the
dominant shrubs in range site (B) are based on 1980 shrub stem density data.
Based on 1979 and 1980 cover data, the dominant forb in range site (B) is Lath-
yrus leucanthus. In 1979, this species comprised 4.5% of the relative cover and
6.9% in 1980 (Tables 2.3-4, 2.3-5).
2-67
The major grass species is Poa
pratensis based on
the 1980 data. Again, the 1979
OP
data is probably less accurate
than the 1980 data
when attempting to define spe-
cies dominance by cover due to
the lower sampling
intensity in 1979.
2-67
