I
RECEIVED
2 20'8
Fort Collins, C'f1,ti'(1i24
ri"`fli '<-1 - ;','-t idi;i0i`10
iNlN NG
December 25,2017
Mr. Jared Ebert
Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining& Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mr. Ebert,
A mounting number of citizens of LaPorte Colorado have long been apprehensive
of the cumulative effects of non-occupational exposure to carcinogenic and disease
causing particulates, sink holes and further deterioration of the environment by
existing Industry in the area. The fears have been compounded by the recent
Loveland Ready Mix Cement's(LRM)acquisition of more than 123 acres of
LaPorte land for purpose of aggregate mining and processing.
The community believes that the addition of more open pit mining and heavy
industrial processing of sand and gravel within the immediate vicinity of the
LaPorte town proper, would be in effect, challenging the community's health and
resilience to the limit and will leave acreage footprint larger than the 6 square mile
town of LaPorte itself.
It is my understanding that the Prevention of Significant Deterioration(PSD)
regulations provide for special protection of Class I designated areas, which are
areas of special national or regional natural, scenic and recreational resource.
With reference to the PSD's provision of special protection to Class I designated
areas, please allow me to bring to your attention that:
1. The Cache La Poudre River Corridor, which runs along the entire length of
LaPorte, from the mountains to its confluence with the South Platte River, is a
National Heritage Area.
2. On October 30, 1986 - 76 miles of the Cache La Poudre Riverbank(part of
which runs along the entire length of the LaPorte area)had been designated as a
Wild and Scenic resource under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
1
