TM cannot protect Little Turkey Creek or recreate the vital, fully evolved riparian corridor, which
supports a large, diverse wildlife population and migratory users. Additionally, when the surface
and ground water are disrupted and/or significantly disturbed, the ecosystem changes and can
no longer support the complex life forms there today. Compromise the creek and you cannot
replace it
Of note, the existing pinion /juniper woodlands habitat, a cornerstone of the area's unique
biological character, also cannot be replaced. When gone, there is nothing to support the
indigenous wildlife population.
Again, to compound the importance of protecting this habitat reclamation, please realize that
there is already the Schmidt quarry in the Big Turkey Creek drainage and it has greatly
disrupted the larger area's existing wildlife population and migration routes. Little Turkey Creek
is now the region's main remaining drainage through which wildlife can move between the
plains up into the higher country to the west. If the creek is compromised and its adjacent
ecosystem affected, the wildlife impact will be large. You cannot simply reclaim such a complex
and important keystone feature of an area.
We object strongly to this proposed quarry. It is unnecessary as there are other quarries nearby
and if they can't provide the granite for the area's demand, there are many other locations which
can provide the granite with much less disturbance to surrounding existing residents, water,
wildlife and the ecosystem. This is a unique, sensitive environment, critical to a much larger
area. Please deny the permit application.
Warren H Dean
