December 12, 2017
Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety
Room 215
1515 Sherman St, Denver CO 80205
Attn: Jim Stark
RE: Application for renewal of Permit: C1981-038 (Bowie #1)
Dear Mr Stark;
F,-- CO EIVED
DEC 1LI2017
Division of Redamati01%
Mining & Safety
We were relieved to have the Paonia Holdings proposal for the Bowie Load out facility denied in a
unanimous vote 69 our Commissioners. They recognized the overwhelming opposition 69 their consituents
and the 6 to 1 denial 6,9 the County Planning Commission. Perhaps more importantly, the County
Commisioners recognized the potential problems inherent in not havingthe site properly reclaimed.
My understanding is that your department defers to the local authority in matters such as the Bowie
reclamation issue. Questions arise as to the time table and scope of the reclamation. It is unclear whether
the issues that came to light duringthe Paonia Holdings application process are included in the reclamation
plan related to the 5 year extension of the Bowie permit.
My specific concern, as the owner of a nearby Winery and Gallery, is that the site 6e cleaned up as soon
as possible. At least 75% of our customers arrive from Aspen, Crested Butte, Carbondale and the front
range . Having the Bowie site in the present condition is tantamount to havinga rusted car in the front yard
of your house. Hardly an impression consistent with the upscale experience our customers expect.
We urge you to clearly define the scope and timetable for a complete reclamation of the site as soon as
possible.
Thank you.
Ty Gillespie
AZURA CELLARS
16764 FARMERS MINE RD, PAONIA,CO 81428 • 970/390-4251 • AZURAVAIL@AOLCOM
