F
VF
12/8/2017 'OFC 71
Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety CNN 0'
Attn:Amy Eschberger VIVO `:4
1313 Sherman St., Room 215 SgFT70y
Denver,CO 80203
Ms. Eschberger
I am sending this note in support of Transit Mix Concrete Co and their application to obtain a permit for
the Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry. I am a 23+yr resident of El Paso County, CO, and a 5+year employee of
Continental Materials Corporation, the parent company of Transit Mix Concrete.
Since moving to the Colorado Springs area 23 yrs ago, I've seen enormous growth and change to the
community. Transit Mix has been a major part of that growth by supplying sand, rock and concrete for
nearly every major project and neighborhood development. They always have and do so responsibly,
safely, competitively and legally.
As much as people don't like or want change, it is inevitable. The citizens of our community want new
businesses, amenities, attractions, opportunities and housing. To have those things, you must have
aggregate for the concrete in foundations, floors, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and roads. The average
citizen has no idea of the enormous need for aggregate material in our community or the limited
locations to obtain it.
It is now time for another change. It is time to open a new modern quarry while closing 2 others. The
new quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch will be nearly invisible from public view except for a handful of
people, while the Pikeview Quarry is seen by thousands daily until reclamation is completed. Opening
the new quarry will remove heavy truck traffic from crowded city roads and put that traffic on a state
highway designed to safely conduct such commerce. The new quarry will provide aggregate material
closer to the market where it will be used while still keeping jobs in El Paso County.
The new quarry location was not only designated as a mineral resource area over 100 yrs ago, it's
section 16 location will provide approx. $30M to schools over the life of the quarry. A quarry on this
private property also will provide the means for the landowner to keep their property in the family for
multiple generations.
For these reasons and many others, I urge the Mined Land Reclamation Board to approve the
application submitted by Transit Mix.
Regards.
Mark Weidner
17245 Colonial Park Dr.
Monument,CO 80132
Mark.Weidnerl3@gmail.com
