V
LORAD DON KNIGHT
COLORADO Councilmember
SPRINGS District 1
OLYMPIC CITY USA \
CITY COUNCIL OFFICE (7ir'y
',,(ti Nov 282uu,
`1` AWN OF Rr~As
To Whom It May Concern: NIi(,gNDB ETV
aN
Colorado Springs and the people of City Council District 1 have been proud to host Transit
Mix's Batch Plant on North Nevada Ave and to have the Pike View Quarry on our western
border for 112 years. Their contributions have been critical to the development of our City and
neighborhoods.
However, change comes to everyone and everything and the time has come for change for both
Transit Mix and District 1. The quarry is nearing it useful life with approximately 10 years
remaining. Conversely, the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) is growing with a
student population now over 10,000. Colorado Springs City Council has recently approved a
North Nevada Master Plan to reinvigorate the corridor to provide much needed services to
UCCS's growing population. The accelerated closing of Transit Mix's Batch Plant on North
Nevada plays heavily into the timing of our recovery plans.
Equally important is the National Cybersecurity Center's new home will be just a few blocks
down the street from the Batch Plant. The Center has already proven a catalyst in attracting
companies wishing to collocate along the North Nevada corridor.
Because Transit Mix has offered to accelerate the closure of Pike View and relocate its North
Nevada Batch Plant in exchange for a permit to open a quarry at Hitch Rack Ranch, the new
quarry would be a boon to the community. For that reason, I am respectfully requesting positive
consideration and action on Transit Mix's application. It would allow both Transit Mix and
Colorado Springs District 1 to take advantage of unique growth opportunities that in all probably
will not be here in 10 years.
•
Don Knight
Colorado Springs City Council, District 1
107 N Nevada Ave, Ste 300
Colorado Springs, CO 80901
719-385-5487
719-368-0729(cell)
107 North Nevada Avenue, Suite 300•TEL 719-385-5487 FAX 719-385-5495
Mailing Address: Post Office Box 1575, Mail Code 1549•Colorado Springs, Colorado 80901-1575
Email: dknight@springsgov.com
