Suite 4600
Denver, CO 80202
RE: Coors Energy Co. C-1981-028
2016 Annual Reclamation Report
Thank you for the February 2017 submittal of your Annual Reclamation Report. DRMS
reviewed Coors Energy's submission of the Annual Reclamation Report (ARR) for the
Keenesburg Mine. The following questions came up during the course of the review:
The Annual reclamation report cites the number of acres backfilled and graded and the
number of acres topsoiled each as 123 acres, a significant increase form the 2015 report.
The acres in long term reclamation are cited as 166, an increase from the 2015 report.
Also, acres in active mining areas increased from 2015. Your providing a brief discussion
of the following questions would be greatly appreciated.
1. Please provide a short explanation of the additional acreages and include area references and
associated acres for:
a. Backfilled and graded areas
b. Topsoiled areas
c. Additions to long term reclamation
d. Additions to active mining areas.
DRMS's review of the 2016 Keenesburg indicates that vegetation monitoring and data
collection were carried out as per Permit section 2.05.4. DRMS notes that cheatgrass
presents a persistent barrier in achieving reclamation success. DRMS also notes that
Keensburg Mine staff is addressing the situation through various means and with variable
outcomes. Areas 23 (with numerous seedings), and 31, (seeded in 2009) appear to be
problematic in reestablishing vegetation.
Please call me at 303.866.3567 ext. 8105 with any questions and concerns.
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http://mining.state.co.usI ' 1, +
* .
John W.
