Slurry in the trench shall be tested at least once per shift when excavation of the trench is advance
and/or backfill is placed. Samples shall be obtained from near the bottom of the trench near the point
of trenching. These tests shall include(see Table 1):
- Unit weight of the slurry by Mud Balance(API Standard 13B-1)
- Filtration loss of the slurry(refer to API Standard 1313-1)
- Viscosity of the slurry(refer to API Standard 13B-1)
- Sand Content of the slurry(refer to API 1313-1)
D. Backfill mixture
A complete series of backfill mixture test shall be conducted at least twice per shift when backfill is
mixed and/or placed into the trench. Gradation shall be conducted at least once per shift. The tests
shall include(see Table 1):
- Slump(refer to ASTM C-143)
- Gradation(refer to ASTM D-422)
- Moisture content(refer to ASTM D-2216)
- Unit Weight(refer to API 13B-1)
- Coefficient of permeability(refer to ASTM D-5084)(once every 1,500 LF)
3.15 DOCUMENTATION
Top of key elevations will be compared to working platform elevations and depth of cut elevations to provide
additional information on actual key depths.
Results of all tests performed in accordance with the specifications will be recorded on forms acceptable to the
Contractor,Engineer and the Owner, and signed by the Contractor and a Quality Control Representative.
These forms will be available to the Owner at all times for inspection. Copies of all forms will be submitted
daily to the Owner for reference.
3.16 COLD WEATHER CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
No frozen backfill or slurry shall be placed in the soil-bentonite slurry wall trench. All ice forming on the
surface of the slurry trench shall be removed prior to the start of each shift. No frozen or frost bearing soil-
bentonite backfill material shall be placed into the trench. When freezing temperatures exist, the Contractor
will conduct visual inspections of the slurry in the trench and the soil-bentonite backfill. The inspection may
include measurement of the temperature,if necessary,to evaluate the potential for frozen material. The
frequency of these inspections will be a minimum of once per day. Typically the inspection will occur early in
the day prior to the placement of any soil-bentonite backfill. Additional inspections may be required if
conditions warrant and/or change.
Slurry wall construction work scheduled and/or performed between November 1 st and March 31 st will require
the submittal,by the Contractor, and approval,by the Engineer,of a work plan detailing cold weather
construction procedures.
END OF SECTION
Section 02168-Page 6 of 6 February 2016
