-s
Transit Mix Concrete Co.
completed in the granodiorite west of the Ranch property also tend to be very low yielding.
Evaluations of water balance and groundwater flow rate towards discharge areas in the Little
Turkey Creek valley, described in detail in Attachment G-2, confirm that the fractured
granodiorite rocks have a limited ability to transmit groundwater flow.
Underlying the eastern portion of the Ranch, and separated from the mining area by the East
Fault, is the Fountain Formation that begins immediately below the top soil and extends several
hundred feet below ground. Groundwater in the sandstone material provides a limited water
supply from intergranular pores and secondary fracturing. Static groundwater levels appear to
be at depths greater than 70 feet, and were reported several hundred feet deep in several of the
wells.
b. Groundwater Level Information
Norwest Corporation (Norwest)established seven groundwater monitoring installations on behalf
of Transit Mix. These were drilled in the summer of 2017 specifically to evaluate groundwater
resources in the vicinity of the Quarry area, and for long-term monitoring of groundwater
conditions. The locations of these installations are shown in Figure G-1 and details of the well
completions are summarized in Table G-8. Six of the borings were completed as monitoring
wells with multiple completions in each boring. The wells are used to monitor groundwater quality
and groundwater levels at several depths within each monitoring facility. The seventh location,
GW-5, was completed with vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) to monitor groundwater pore
pressures.
Instantaneous water levels were measured by hand using a water-level meter starting in July
2017, and pressure transducers with data loggers were installed on September 13, 2017. The
pressure transducers record water levels at 15-minute intervals. The VWPs installed at the GW-5
monitoring site have been operational since August 2017 and record water levels at 30-minute
intervals. Detailed presentation and discussion of groundwater level measurement history from
these monitoring installations is included in Attachment G-2. A summary of water levels, and
equivalent potentiometric elevations, measured in wells and by VWPs that are representative of
in situ groundwater conditions (i.e. not influenced by recent drilling or well sampling) are
presented in Table G-9. In practical terms, the potentiometric head generally is equivalent to the
elevation of the top of the water column in a well when it is not being pumped. Groundwater
elevation and potentiometric elevation are equivalent terms.
Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry Permit Application
October 3,2017 G-28
