LIST B <br /> Houndstongue - Cynoglossum officinale <br /> A short-lived perennial or biennial forb. Produces rosettes in the first <br /> year, and bolts a stout erect stem that is 1 to 4 feet tall by mid-summer <br /> of the second year. Seeds have barbs like Velcro and will cling to ani- <br /> mals, clothing, and machinery. Houndstongue is poisonous and can be <br /> lethal to livestock. <br /> Identification: <br /> • Flowers: Reddish-purple with 5 petals and 5 soft, hairy sepals. <br /> Slightly drooping from densely clustered panicles. <br /> • Leaves: Lance or oblong-shaped, with a smooth edge and no teeth <br /> or lobes. Leaf tip is sharply pointed, like a hound's tongue. <br /> • Seeds: Prickly teardrop-shaped nutlets in a pyramid-shaped <br /> receptacle. <br /> Control methods: <br /> Biological: <br /> No insect biological control available. <br /> Mechanical: <br /> Cut or pull plants, remove entire root crown when plants are in <br /> rosette stage. <br /> Chemical: <br /> Metsulfuron: Apply in spring, rosette to early bud growth stages. <br /> *Picloram: Apply in spring, rosette stage. <br /> *Restricted-use chemical <br /> 36 <br />
