MAY DAY IDAHO MINE COMPLEX
M 1981 185,112d 2 AMENDMENT (AM -2) APPLICATION
SUNRISE MINING, LLC
Exhibit D
Attachment D-3
Whole Rock Characterization
Background
Sunrise is proposing to operate the May Day Idaho Mine Complex located in La Plata County
approximately 15 miles west of Durango, Colorado. Sunrise is in the process of activating the Mine
Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mine identification number 05-03674. When activation has
been approved, mine site corrective actions will be implemented as approved. Representative mine rock
will be geochemically characterized to determine the potential to be acid or toxic producing.
Work Plan
Representative channel samples will be obtained consisting of cuttings collected from a groove cut into
llected and sent to the lab for
the rock about 4 inches wide and about an inch deep. The samples will be co
assaying. In addition, representative 30-50 pound bulk sampling will be periodically collected for
laboratory purposes. Samples obtained after 5,000 tons of mined ore will be tested as follows:
• Whole Rock Analysis: A representative sample will be crushed to approximately -400 mesh
and analyzed by standard x-ray fluorescence (XRF) procedure for 31 major, minor and trace
elements. Testing will also include paste pH/electrical conductivity.
• Acid -Base Accounting: Representative samples will be crushed to -21/2 mesh and analyzed for
pH (1:1 rock: deionized water extract), Total Sulfur (high-temperature furnace Combustion)
and CaCO3 (digestion with hot acid, titration with NaOH). (Sobek et. al., 1978);
Short term leaching tests will be conducted to assess the presence of readily soluble
components using the synthetic precipitation leaching process (SPLP)(ASTM-6234);
Conduct a humidity cell test to empirically assess the relationship, under laboratory
conditions, between drainage quality and Laboratlid phase ory Weathering of Sold osition 1ng procedures Materials Using atlined
in ASTM D-5744 (Test Methodfor
Humidity Cell.)
For all solids tests (e.g., SPLP, humidity cell, acid-base accounting, whole rock analyses,
solution characterization methods. Sunrise will include sulfide sulfur in the ABA
protocol which will also quantifies AP, NP, Net NP, paste pH and acid soluble sulfate and
sulfide.
14
