Preliminary Report for Data Recovery at Sites MK -1-082317 and MK -2-082317 Colowyo Coal Company
3.2.3.6 Feature 8
Feature 8 is semi -circular dark stained sediment with charcoal flecking and HAR measuring
approximately 48 cm north to south by 38 cm east to west (Figures 24 and 25). Actual top of the
feature is unknown. However, the feature appears to be approximately 15 cm below ground
surface. The size and location of the feature within the site grid system necessitated one 1 by 1
m unit being established to investigate it.
The feature's depth below the mechanically exposed surface is 5 cm below the 174N 200E unit
datum. Overall feature shape appears to be roughly circular in planview with a lenticular profile.
Rooting and burrowing insects have caused minor distortion of the feature boundaries. Feature
fill consisted of dark stained sediment (10YR3/1, Very Dark Gray) with sparse charcoal flecking.
Of the HAR, one piece is 10 cm diameter size class (0.8 kg) and one in the 10 to 5 cm diameter
size class (0.08 kg). The sandstone HAR is blackened, angular, fractured pieces.
Figure 24. Site MK -2-082317, Feature 8, Pre -Excavation, facing west.
Tetra Tech September 29, 2017 23
