Preliminary Report for Data Recovery at Sites MK -1-082317 and MK -2-082317 Colowyo Coal Company
Figure 10. Site MK -1-082317, Feature 3, Full Excavation, facing north.
3.1.3.4 Feature 5
Feature 5 is a semi -circular stained sediment feature with dense charcoal and pebble sized,
rounded gravels measuring approximately 54 cm north to south by 51 cm east to west. Actual top
of the feature is unknown. The feature appears to be approximately 20 cm below ground surface.
The size and location of the feature within the site grid system necessitated two 1 by 1 m units
being established to investigate it.
The feature's depth below the mechanically exposed surface is 9 cm below the 195N 196E unit
datum. Overall feature shape appears to be roughly circular in planview and basin shaped in
profile (Figures 11 and 12). Root and burrowing insect action is moderately distorting the northern
half, while impacts to the southern half are significantly distorting its shape. Feature fill consisted
of dark stained sediment (10YR2/1, Gray); dense charcoal flecking; and dense HAR and
unaltered rock. Five pieces of HAR were recovered. One HAR is in the 5 to 3 cm diameter size
class (< 0.25 kg), two are in the 3 to 1 diameter size class (< 0.25 kg), and two are in the 1 cm
diameter size class (< 0.25 kg).
Tetra Tech September 29, 2017
