PERMIT#: M-2000-092
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE: September 26,2017
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection conducted by Eric Scott for DRMS. The last inspection for this site
was conducted in March of 2013. The Walsenburg Gravel Pit is a 9.9 acre 110c permit held by the City of
Walsenburg. The site is located approximately 3 miles NE of Walsenburg north of State Hwy 10. DRMS
attempted several times to contact a permittee representative prior to this inspection but was unsuccessful,
therefore, no permittee representative was present for this inspection. The site identification sign was noted
at the intersection of Hwy 10 and the site access road, but should be replaced as it is almost illegible and
incomplete (Photo 1). This issue was also noted during the previous inspection.
Steel T-posts believed to be permit boundary markers were observed and GPS located (see attached map).
Although the last submitted annual report for the site indicates that the site was last active in late 2014, based
on the overgrown condition of the pit and access road (Photos 2-6), the site appears to have been inactive for
much longer. This has been cited on the first page of this report as a problem for failure to complete timely
reclamation or place the site into temporary cessation. A corrective action due date of October 31, 2017 has
been set for the permittee to either commence final reclamation, or place the site into temporary cessation
status.
Successful reclamation at this point would consist of removing or grading the remaining small stockpiles on
site, and re-contouring some of the remaining steep slopes to a grade of 3:1 or flatter. Vegetation will need to
be re-established on areas that have not already naturally revegetated or areas disturbed by additional
required earthwork.
No other issues were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Mark Ellis
City of Walsenburg
525 S Albert
Walsenburg,CO 81089
