August 24, 2017 <br />Subject: Cultural Resource Discoveries MK -1-082317 and MK -2-072617 at the Colowyo Collom <br />Expansion Project, Moffat County, Colorado <br />To whom it may concern, <br />The following two cultural resource discoveries (MK -1-082317 and MK -2-082317) were encountered <br />as part of ongoing cultural resource monitoring activities associated with the Collom Expansion Project <br />(Project). The High Potential Area (HPA) cultural resource monitoring is being conducted as stipulated <br />per the Cultural Resource Protection Plan developed for the Project. The following report is provided <br />as part of the Discovery Reporting section outlined in the same plan. Attached to this memo are <br />preliminary OAHP site forms for each discovery with supporting photographs and figures. <br />The monitor flagged off both discoveries with a 100 foot (30 m) avoidance buffer in accordance with <br />the Cultural Resource Protection Plan. <br />MK -1-082317 <br />On August 23, 2017 Tetra Tech's cultural resource monitor observed two thermal features <br />approximately 20 cm below surface within the haul road immediately west of Country Road 51. No <br />surface cultural resource material was observed at the location prior to the commencement of the <br />disturbance. While the upper portion of each feature was likely removed during ground stripping the <br />remaining portions appear to be intact. No other cultural material or intact sediments remain at the <br />location. <br />The horizontal extent of the site is limited to the two features within the disturbance area. The discovery <br />is recommended eligible for inclusion on the NRNP. The site cannot be avoided, Tetra Tech <br />recommends data recovery be conducted on the two features and continued monitoring at the location <br />afterward. <br />MK -2-082317 <br />On August 23, 2017 Tetra Tech's cultural resource monitor was observing top soil stripping activities <br />associated with the haul road construction east of County Road 51. The monitor identified a site within <br />the disturbance area consisting of seven associated thermal features at an approximate depth of 5-10 <br />cm below ground surface. No surface cultural resource material was observed at the location prior to <br />the commencement of the disturbance. While the upper portion of each feature was likely removed <br />during ground stripping the remaining portions appear to be intact.
