PERMIT #: M-1977-129
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: SJM
INSPECTION DATE: August 10, 2017
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety's (Division) normal
monitoring program. Mark Gardner, Joy Wilson and Darrell Garcia, representing the Operator, were present
during this inspection. Photographs are included with this report in order to illustrate some of the conditions
observed.
The Whitewater 500 Pit is located approximately 5 miles southwest of Grand Junction and accessed from
Coffman Road. The site is a 112c operation that includes a total of 491.70 permitted acres with 145.93 acres
current disturbed acres. The Division currently holds a financial warranty amount of $ 287,500.00 for this site.
The Division will review the reclamation costs in order to ensure the financial warranty reflects the actual
current cost of fulfilling the requirements of the Reclamation Plan. The Operator will be notified under
separate cover if the Division determines that the current financial warranty amount is insufficient.
The mine identification sign was observed at the entrance to the site.
The boundaries of the affected area were clearly marked with a combination of fencing or boundary markers.
The active pit is located in the western part of the permit area in Stage 4 south of the Railroad. The highwall is
advancing south easterly towards the Gunnison River. The highwall is estimated to be 12'-15' deep. Stage 3 -
Part B has been adequately graded for final reclamation totaling 108 acres.
Waste Fuel is being stored adequately with secondary containment. All other fuel storage is outside of the
permit boundary east of the scale house.
There were some Russian Knapweed observed, but it does not appear to be a problem at this time. The
Operator is spraying in disturbed areas around Phase 2 and 3.
No other problems or violations were noted during this inspection.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Stephanie Mitchell at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, Grand Junction Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado
81501, phone number (970) 242-5025.
