STATE OF Scott-DNR, Eric <eric.scott@state.co.us>
COLORADO
Climax 5 Dam Seepage Return Line
1 message
Lazuk, Raymond <rlazuk@fmi.com> Wed, Sep 6, 2017 at 12:20 PM
To: "Scott-DNR, Eric" <eric.scott@state.co.us>
Eric,
This email is to follow-up on our telephone conversation yesterday regarding the apparent leak in the 5 Dam Seepage
Return Line from the 5 Dam Pump Station to the 3 Dam Pump Station. We have confirmed based on visual observations
that a portion of the seepage in the 5 Dam seepage return line is surfacing in the interior of the Mayflower Tailing Storage
Facility(TSF) near a buried valve, well away from the dam, and that the majority of the seepage is still reporting to the 3
Dam Pump Station. The 3 Dam Pump Station is used to pump both 3 Dam seepage and 5 Dam seepage to the Sludge
Densification Plant(SDP)for stage 1 pH adjustment(pH 7) metals removal. The discharge from the SDP ultimately
reports to the Mayflower TSF water pool which is then pumped to either the mill process water circuit or to the Property
Discharge Water Treatment Plant(PDWTP)for stage 2 pH adjustment(pH 10)final metals removal before it is
discharged to Tenmile Creek. The Mayflower TSF water pool also is at a pH of 7 and therefore the same metals removal
that occurs at the SDP also is occurring in the Mayflower TSF. For this reason Climax does not expect to see any change
in permitted effluent quality at the CDPS permit outfall.
Given the location of the leaking line under the Mayflower TSF, there is no option to repair the existing line. Climax is
therefore examining permanent options to replace the 5 Dam Seepage Return Line. Once a decision is made on line
replacement Climax will address any regulatory requirements including permit modifications at that time.
Please let me know if you need anything further regarding this matter. Our goal is to develop an appropriate strategy to
replace the seepage return line as quickly as possible.
- Ray
