Waldron, Minerals Program Supervisor
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Subject: Potential Preservation of the Pandora Mill
Proposed Process to Secure Release from Existing DRMS Permit
Idarado Mine,Permit M1977403HRp
San Miguel County, Colorado 0Orre re.3t t\C 62.
Dear Mr. Waldron:
As you are aware, Idarado Mining Company (Idarado) has been working with the Town of
Telluride (Town), and San Miguel County (County) on possible ways those entities might be
able to preserve the Pandora Mill (Mill). As a result, for the past years, there have been
discussions as to what potential future uses the site may include. The latest iterations have
focused on possible preservation of the Mill building and a few auxiliary structures, with the
goal to support historical tourism. As you pointed out in your March 31, 2017, letter to
Idarado's Mr. Larry Fiske, the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS
or Division) stated that it would be prudent to discuss what administrative steps will be
required to facilitate:
• remediation,
• reclamation,
• securing access,
• and long teen maintenance in order to secure the release of these structures from the
remaining permitted area.
The goal of this letter is to initiate the discussion regarding the remediation component
identified above.
Proposed Future Use(s)
The Town and the County are keenly aware of the known and potential hazards posed by the
environment and the public by the Mill. Although your March 31, 2017, letter addresses the
goal of exterior viewing, at this stage, three proposed future uses are being considered to
achieve a reasonable balance between the countervailing forces of preserving history,
providing a safe and enjoyable visitor experience, and cost.
P.O.
