Cultural Resource Historic Properties Treatment Plan for BK -1-072617 Colowyo Coal Company
3.4.4 Radiometric Sample Processing
All collected radiometric dating samples will be submitted to Beta Analytic for processing and
reporting. The samples will be collected and submitted per their guidelines. Tetra Tech will work
closely with the Beta Analytic to ensure timely processing and quality results. The dates will assist
placing the site into the regional cultural chronology and inform on specific subsistence practices
and landscape utilization patterns.
3.4.5 Protein Residue Analysis
If lithic tools and/or groundstone is recovered during testing or data recovery efforts, artifacts (or
a sample if assemblage is large) will be submitted to PaleoResearch Institute for protein residue
analysis. PaleoResearch Institute will handle the processing and reporting on the submitted
samples. Tetra Tech will work closely with the PaleoResearch Institute to ensure timely
processing and quality results. The data can contribute to questions of subsistence practice and
regional resource utilization.
3.4.6 Intrasite Spatial Analysis
Once all artifact analysis and sample processing has been completed and the results tabulated,
it will be compared to the spatial location and distribution of the collected material. Both the
horizontal and vertical aspects of the assemblage will be examined. The collected
geoarchaeological analysis and component(s) integrity assessment will also be incorporated into
the overall analysis. The analysis will help address the research question of intrasite spatial
patterning, site function, and organization as well as assisting in assessing cultural component
integrity.
3.4.7 Post -Analysis Artifact Handling
The site is located on privately held Colowyo land; therefore any recovered cultural material is the
property of Colowyo. As such, artifact curation is not required to conform to guidelines outlined in
36 CFR § 79 including curation of material at a federally recognized curation facility. The only
exception is human bone and/or funerary objects which will be handled under Colorado Revised
Statute 24-80-1301 et seq.
Colowyo will be offered the material once all analysis has been completed and final report
submitted and approved by OSMRE and OAHP. If Colowyo declines to take the artifacts, Tetra
Tech will discuss with OSMRE and OAHP appropriate places for either potential research
donations or curation.
3.5 Reporting and Dissemination
Several levels of reporting will be completed as part of the HPTP.
3.5.1 Evaluative Testing Technical Memorandum
Upon completion of evaluative testing, Tetra Tech will provide Colowyo, OSMRE, DRMS, and
OAHP with a technical memorandum report summarizing the results. The memorandum will
provide the testing results information as an explanation of what areas will be and won't be further
investigated under the Data Recovery part of the HPTP. The memorandum will include supporting
figures, maps, and photographs as appropriate.
Tetra Tech August 8, 2017 13
