5. Results <br /> 5.1 Kinematic Analyses <br /> Kinematic analysis provides a factor of safety based on measured geometry and Mohr- <br /> Coulomb strength parameters. A factor of safety below 1.2 indicates the potential for failure; <br /> the higher the factor of safety,the more stable the bench. Results for the kinematic analyses <br /> are listed in Table 3. The column titled"Analysis Description"describes both whether <br /> planar, wedge, or rock toppling(direct, flexural, and oblique) analysis was conducted and if <br /> the analysis view was global or an individual bench. Both the east and the west facing <br /> highwalls were considered for this analysis and the column titled"Wall Face Direction" <br /> indicates the appropriate highwall. Analyses with similar descriptions were grouped and a <br /> range was given for the factor of safety. Analysis result figures are presented in Appendix D. <br /> There were six simulations with a factor of safety indicating potential failure. The results <br /> show that global failures are highly unlikely, and small, localized failures of a single bench <br /> or highwall are more likely to occur. The failure of a single bench or highwall is unlikely to <br /> propagate. All other analyses resulted in a factor of safety above 1.2, which indicates that <br /> failure is unlikely to occur. These analyses did not consider any outside loads(e.g. <br /> earthquake or water pressure loads), which could affect the factor of safety. <br /> Global analyses resulted in a higher factor of safety (2.5-5.3)than individual bench analyses <br /> for all types of kinematic analyses. Kinematic failure on a global scale is not anticipated. The <br /> individual bench analyses that indicated areas of concern are most likely due to the <br /> orientation of joints. These joints causing localized areas of concern do not extend a <br /> sufficient distance into the highwall to develop global failure. <br /> In every case,the factor of safety was higher on the west facing wall versus the east facing <br /> wall. This is due to the height of the benches. The 40 ft height of the west facing benches will <br /> be more stable than the 70 ft height of the east facing benches. Analysis of the west facing <br /> wall does not indicate global or localized areas of concern. <br /> Table 4 presents the percentage of poles that could cause a toppling failure or an estimate of <br /> the probability of failure.
