orientations measurements were taken from a safe distance from highwalls (approximately
30+ ft) due to mining activities and rockfall safety concerns.
Joint and foliation orientations obtained during Annual Report mapping within the South
Quarry were used for stability modeling using kinematic and global stability modeling
software, including the Rocscience software suite. Five main discontinuity sets were
identified during field investigations and mapped each year for Annual Reporting. These
discontinuities are summarized below.
2.3.1 Foliation
The foliation within the South Quarry strikes in a generally north-south to northwest-
southeast direction. Measured foliations with South Quarry exhibit a strike range from 5 to
360 degrees, with a high degree of variability. Foliation dip measurements ranged from 5 to
80 degrees. The South Quarry foliation tends to dip in a southwest direction, but also exhibits
a high degree of variability. The high variability of the foliation orientation within the South
Quarry is typical of the geological events and source rock contributing to the geology found
in and around Morrison Quarry.
2.3.2 Primary Northwest Trending Joint Set
The primary northwest trending joint was observed at different locations in the South Quarry
during Annual Report mapping to have average strike values ranging from 8 to 291 degrees
and average dips ranging from 55 to 88 degrees. There is a high variability in the average
strike and dip of this primary joint set which is typical of geology found in and around
Morrison Quarry.
2.3.3 Primary Northeast Trending Joint Set
The primary northeast trending joint set was observed at different locations in the South
Quarry during Annual Report mapping to have average strike values ranging from 6 degrees
to 343 degrees and average dips ranging from 58 to 88 degrees. There is high variability in
the average strike and dip of this primary joint set which is typical of geology found in and
around Morrison Quarry.
2.3.4 Secondary North Trending Joint Set
The secondary north trending joint set was observed at different locations throughout the
South Quarry during Annual Report mapping to have average strike values ranging from 60
to 347 degrees and average dips ranging from 45 to 78 degrees.
Aggregate Industries Morrison Quarry GEI Consultants, Inc.
South Quarry Highwall Design Technical Revision 8 August 2017
