Location/Access: Site is located on privately held land within an MSHA Permit Area. Landowner permission and
MSHA training required before accessing.
III. NATURAL ENVIRONMENT/SITE CONDITION
20. General Description (should include both on site as well as geographical setting with aspect, landforms, vegetation,
soils, depositional environment, water, ground visibility): Site was discovered during top soil stripping activities on the
southern side of the haul road at station 151+50. The discovery is located on the northern toe slope of a northeast to
southwest trending drainage. The locality overlooks Wilson Creek to the east. The two thermal features and sparsely
scattered artifacts were observed at an average depth of 30 cm below current ground surface with no surface cultural
manifestations observed prior to disturbance. Sediments are a valley fill silt clay loam with sparse pebble size gravels.
Vegetation is sagebrush, rabbitbrush, thistle and various grasses and forbs. Surface vegetation ground coverage is
30 percent.
21. Soil depth (cm) and description: Sediments are a valley fill silt clay loam with sparse pebble size gravels. Ground
stripping for the haul road indicates that the valley fill sediments average 40 to 50 cm in depth before encountering a clay
loam regolith with dense angular sandstone pebble to boulder sized gravels.
